Zardari orders for new jail manuals
By RAMZAN CHANDIO October 11, 2008 Speaking on the occasion, Advisor to CM on Jail Affairs, Gul Muhammad Jakhrani, said that PPP government was paying due attention to resolve the problems of prisoners while priority was being given to juvenile and women prisoners. He claimed that the trend of torture in jails has vanished and this was the main reason that everyday prisoners go onto the rooftops of jails and chant slogans. The government has allowed freedom of expression to prisoners and trying its utmost for providing basic facilities to them, he said, adding that every prisoner will get education, computer and technical training which will help them to earn income after their release.
Jakhrani informed that President Asif Ali Zardari has ordered that special attention should to be given to solve the problems of prisoners and has directed the law minister to prepare a draft of jail manual to replace the present one devised during the British era.
He said that new jail manual would be introduced soon as huge number of prisoners were languishing in jails and waiting for trial for more than 10 years. The judges will hear the cases of prisoners in jails and the inmates who had committed minor crimes will be released immediately, he added.
Jakhrani informed that out of 20,000 prisoners in the Sindh province, at least 86.7 per cent were under trial.
