First surgery performed to fix haemorrhage

KARACHI (APP) - Neurosurgeon at Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre here on Thursday successfully performed the first non - invasive surgery to correct “Brain Aneurysm” at any of the public sector facilities of the country.
The intervention surgery conducted previously in few of the private hospitals is quite costly and generally beyond the means of local patients inflicted with haemorrhage or stroke due to dilatation and consequent rupture of blood vessels in the brain.
The team led by Surgeon Arshad Ali operated upon 60 year old Sabra Bibi from Punjab. She was brought to the Brain Centre (Neurology Department) established with the support of Rangoonwala Foundation.
Doctors associated with the Centre told APP that Brain Aneurysm caused due to weakening of brain vessels in mainly registered among the elderly (above 50), however, can also be reported in people of younger age group.
It is basically billowing of the vessel that ruptures due to age related weakness, however, in certain instance may remain static and break or crack in face of to high blood pressure,” elaborated one of the doctors.
Under the non conventional and extremely delicate procedure catheter is placed at rupture site so as to remove the blood that otherwise scatters and causes the serious morbidity in an otherwise physically and mentally active individual.
Surgeons and neurologists associated with the Brain Centre expressed gratitude to the local philanthropists for providing most modern equipment at part with any private hospitals for patients in little position to meet heavy medical bills.
