Pakistan team leaves to attend Saarc moot
Source: OUR STAFF REPORTER July 17, 2008 It is putting forth the idea of a South Asian Union. “What the countries of the South Asia are in need today is new radical imagination that can shape the creation of a new South Asian Union into a reality and give rise to a new political future in the region.
The dream for such a “People’s Union of South Asia” could be a creative force that could transcend the notion of the Post-Colonial Nation-State and National Sovereignty and subvert the narrow nationalist discourse isolating people by erecting walls of suspicion, encouraging hostilities and intolerance, and prohibiting the free intercourse and interaction of people in the region so as to maintain the hegemony of the ruling class of each country of the region”, the PILER official added.
He said that over 500 delegates were expected to come from all the South Asian countries of SAARC for the upcoming assembly to forge solidarity and alliance between peoples for democracy, justice and peace in the region.
The highlights of the three-day event include various cultural programmes, a mass rally on the last day and numerous parallel workshops titled “Movements, Resistance, Alternatives” throughout the conference while main plenary topics are: “South Asia Today and the New South Asia We Want” and “Towards a New South Asia”. On behalf of Pakistan, Munir A. Malik will address the opening session and Senator Abdul Malik will speak in the concluding one.
