PML-Q Sindh quits Musharraf's drowning boat

By Zamir Sheikh August 18, 2008

These soldiers of opportune and man of all season know the art as to how and where their bread will be buttered. These political weathercocks won the Feb 18 elections by hook and by crook but after seeing the writings of walls they managed to mend their ways with PPP and voted for Qaim Ali Shah for the slot of provincial chief executive. As for as PML (F) is concerned it is following the famous maxim, “running with hare and hunting with hounds”, despite the fact the party can give tough time to the ruling coalition, which enjoys carte blanche in the House.

MQM took a landmark decision by absenting itself from voting proving that they are with their major coalition partner but at the same time sending the signal that they do not want the President is impeached in the parliament.

The no-confidence vote in the Sindh and other provincial assemblies has no legal binding and it is mere a moral pressure than anything else.

Rumours and biased political analysts had predicted a testing time for the PPP after Makhdoom Jameeluz zaman, son of President PPP Parliamentarians Makhdoom Amin Fahim resigned from the provincial cabinet triggering speculative reports that there were some kind of defection among the PPP legislators in Sindh and that there was threat to the government of Syed Qaim Ali Shah.

However, no such things happened and not only the PPP led coalition remained intact but the solidarity of the party in the province remained unhurt.

The PPP in the Sindh may have weathered the political storm but there is warning in the air that if interest of the PPP legislators is not served in the right manner, there could be a change of guard at the Chief Minister’s house.

This may not happen immediately and would depend on the things that would evolve in near future.

The vote brought to surface hitherto hidden fissures in the provincial PPP. Only one group of members were allowed to speak on the no confidence motion whereas others not were allowed or given a chance to take the floor and expressed their solidarity to the party.
