Japanese disease detected in Karachi
By SYED JAFAR ASKARI July 18, 2008 If Kawasaki disease is treated within 10 days of the onset of symptoms, heart problems usually do not develop. Treatment should begin as soon as possible, ideally within 10 days of when the fever begins.
Usually, a child is treated with intravenous doses of gamma globulin (purified antibodies), an ingredient of blood that helps the body fight infection. The child also might be given a high dose of aspirin to reduce the risk of heart problems.”
According to Wikipedia encyclopedia, the cardiac complications are, by far, the most important aspect of the disease. Kawasaki disease can cause vasculitic changes (inflammation of blood vessels) in the coronary arteries and subsequent coronary artery aneurysms.
These aneurysms can lead to myocardial infarction (heart attack) even in young children. Overall, about 10-18 per cent of children with Kawasaki disease develop coronary artery aneurysms Kawasaki syndrome and risk factors for coronary artery abnormalities.
Commenting on the issue, Secretary PMA Dr Samrina Hashmi said that it was fortunate that the disease was not infectious, while the citizens should be aware of the fatality of the disease. She said that the treatment of the disease was very expensive, which unaffordable for poor families.
In this regard, the government should take concrete measures to provide treatment facilities at government hospitals. She demanded the government to take some important changes in our visa policies so that such type of diseases could not be imported into the country.
