Thaddo Dam Forest ready to produce honey, silk
Source: SYED INTIKHAB ALI July 21, 2008 KARACHI - Forest department of CDGK after successfully establishing a thick green jungle at Thaddo Dam in Gadap town, is going to use the benefits of jungle in different manner so that some revenue to be generated as various project including production of Honey, Silk and Neel. Sources told The Nation on Sunday.
The CDGK had established the jungle at outskirts of Karachi city two years back where more then one lacks trees of various kinds had been planted at 85 acres land, now trees rapidly groomed and a real look of forest emerged in the outskirts of the city.
This Jungle popularly known as Karachi’s Chang Manga, now is becoming one of the flourishing projects of the CDGK, which had been conceived for picnicking and entertainment purposes for Karachiites .But now the Forest department is also working on various projects to generate revenue for city government through the Jungle.
Sources disclosed The Nation that, honey would be produced through this jungle by establishing honey boxes where Hones Bees would collect and store honey. It will also be used for the production of Silk through Silkworm from trees of Malbari and Neel, which is used for dye cloths and also natural blue colure to cloths and vehicles on commercial basis across the world.
City Nazim Mustafa Kamal told The Nation, that city government is focusing to change the environment of Karachi city, and working to change the forest not only for picnic purposes but also produce revenue through production of honey, silk and some other productions .he said.
He said that since the establishment of the Jungle at Thaddo Dam, the Siberian birds started to come here which would help in the beautification of the spot.
He said that CDGK, is also planting thousands of trees on all main roads of the city including Karachi University Road, M. A. Jinnah Road, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Shahrah-e-Pakistan, and various other parts of the city to change the look of the city .
The sources in the Forest department said that one of the project to produce Honey is ready for implementing at Thaddo Dam’s forest as around 6 thousand wild Beri trees have been planted in the forest months back and they are rapidly grooming and Forest department would bring bee here from September set up honey boxes to prepare pure and precious honey through natural purposes, sources said.
The DO Forest department Saeed Ahmed Peerani, told the Nation that the forest department had planted such varieties of the tree which produce maximum flowers so that bee to be attracted on those trees sipping the juices of the flower and produce pure honey through natural procedure as complete study has been carried out in this regard.
The honey of wild (Beri) is unique and precious and Forest department has planted around 6 thousands trees in the Gadap town for this purposes, and Bee, its boxes and frames which to be used in the honey production are being set up here and the honey production would be started by the end of September, Mr Peerani said.
