Zardari's political acumen gives birth to new realities

By ZAMIR SHEIKH August 25, 2008

Zardari took a decisive step in the restoration of judges when he had a summary prepared for the reappointment of eight judges of Sindh and a number of others in Punjab but his plans were dashed when Nawaz Sharif got the hint of the move and threatened to quit the coalition if the announcement, which was about to be made, was made public and issued to the media. But he sacrificed immediate restoration of judges in Sindh and Punjab at the altar of saving the coalition.

Had he gone on with his plans to bringing back non-PCO judges, the coalition was doomed.

Now another deadline has been fixed for the restoration of pre-Nov 3 Judiciary.

Our leaders perhaps are unaware of the fact the deadlines set by them cause huge stress to the masses who were groaning under spiral of prices, rampant unemployment, deteriorating law and order situation in the country particularly in NWFP.

It was said that law and order would improve and menace of suicide bombing will stop, economy will boost and there will be milk and honey in the country after Pervez Musharraf quit the office.

Now Musharraf is no more on the helms of affair, the suicide bombing is continue unabated, stock market, which shown improvement two days, again witnessed downward trend and the rupee start sliding. The government, facing a liquidity crunch, is mulling over declaring two weekly holidays to off set rising petroleum bill.

Plight of the poor and downtrodden could be gauged from the incident that took place recently in Mirpurkhas district where a teenage boy was arrested for stealing two kilogram of wheat flour from a shop.

Thirteen-year-old Gordhan Meghwar of Sattar Nagar says that he was compelled to steal because his mother and 10-year-old sister had been without food for three days. His father had died a year ago and his elder brother is unemployed.

This heartrending incident is an eye opener and awakening call for our leaders, who while sitting in cozy palaces stuck in secondary issues, instead of ameliorating the lot of poor.

The downtrodden masses who pinned hopes in the government, feeling disturbed and a cauldron of uncertainty is boiling which can explode any time.
