Public facing prolonged power cuts, water shortage

KARACHI - The metropolis on Monday faced massive load shedding comprising on four different spells, each 2-hour long adding to people's problems multiplied with water shortage.
The increasing temperature of the city has widened the gap between supply and demand of electricity up to 600MW due to the disconnection of supply to Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) from the Unit-4 of Korangi Thermal Power, Bin Qasim Power Plant units 1 and 3, KANNUP and DHA unit.
Source in KESC told that Unit for of Korangi suddenly tripped on Monday caused deprivation of 80MW to KESC and it will take more three days to be normalised.
Bin Qasim power plant's unit 3 was closed since last week after leakage developed in its boiler, KESC sources said. The closure caused suspension of 120-megawatt power supply to the city. The power plant's unit-1 already closed due to technical faults.
The supply of 80 MW from KANNUP which has been disconnected since last four days couldn't be restored and according to source it would likely to restore on Tuesday (today).
The difference between demand and supply of power in Karachi has reached to 600 as total demand of the city has reached upto 2400MW and disconnection of supply from the above mentioned units and partners of KESC has indulged the city into darkness.
All residential and commercial areas undergoing two-hour load shedding after every hour, KESC sources confirmed.
The residents of Allah Rakha Park, G Elena Road, Kaharader Police Post and Pariya Street had suffered 7 to 8 hours long power breakdown. People were suffering with the power outage from Sunday evening due to underground cable fault.
The students of HSC and Technical Board Sindh whom examinations were underway complained that many of the examination centres plunged into the darkness as the dark clouds appeared on the sky and sun was not seeing. The examinations rooms were full of darkness due to prolong power failure, the students appeared in the exams said.
