KARACHI (PPI) - Natural treatments of thyroid disease are getting popularity due to their low cost and virtually no side effects.
Hypothyroidism is basically a malfunction of the thyroid gland meaning the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones required for optimal functioning of the body. Thyroid hormones regulate growth and metabolism and a lack of these hormones causes the body to slow down which can cause coldness, aching limbs and muscles, dizziness, constipation and severe fatigue and many other symptoms.
Thyroid disease is estimated to be present in up to 15% of the population. It is more prevalent in women than men, and may have a hereditary component. Disorders of the thyroid are an autoimmune disease of the thyroid, meaning that the body attacks it’s own thyroid gland the same as it attacks other invaders of the body.
Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include - Irregular heart rate, heat intolerance, nervousness, sleep disturbance, shortness of breath, increased bowel movements, menstrual changes, fatigue, trembling hands, weight loss, muscle weakness, warm moist skin, hair loss, fluid retention, depression, decreased memory and concentration, unhealthy nails and/or brittle nails, low libido, itchy rash, asthma and allergies, and delayed healing.
When someone is diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, their doctor will usually prescribe a synthetic Thyroid hormone called Thyroxine or T4. While this works well for many, some people find it difficult to tolerate and suffer side effects, and they look for alternative medications.
There are many natural ways to support a healthy functioning thyroid gland. A healthy diet, herbs, homeopathic medicine and other natural therapies can provide positive outcomes for your hormone health. Foods to avoid - These foods suppress thyroid function, but may be eaten in moderation.
Refined foods, saturated fats, sugars, white flour products, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, kale, mustard greens, peaches and pears. Choose a diet that contains at least fifty percent fresh fruits and vegetables, preferably grown organically.
In the new diet plan for treating thyroid naturally, avoid caffeine as it can have a suppressive effect on thyroid gland function. Green tea is the exception as it is considered beneficial for thyroid gland function. Eat zinc-rich foods such as oysters and pumpkin seeds. Eat selenium-rich foods such as asparagus, Brazil nuts, grains, garlic and mushrooms.
