Sindh gets 26.66pc less water share

By RAMZAN CHANDIO September 29, 2008

The IRSA had recently formed a committee which visited the canals of Sindh and gauged the water flow to Balochistan. But according to report submitted by the committee, the charges levelled by Balochistan government of less supply of water against Sindh proved wrong.

Similarly, Sindh received 18.51 per cent less water at Sukkur Barrage as total withdrawal in barrage was recorded of 47,260 cusecs against share of 58,000 cusecs allocated in water accord.

The share of Balochistan is 2200 cusecs while Sindh’s share is 55,800 cusecs in Sukkur barrage. The official data showed that Kotri barrage remained worst affected of water shortage in Indus River, as not a single drop of water was released to downstream against 23,300 cusecs share enshrined in Water Accord 1991.

According to water experts, Sindh will suffer further shortage of water as over all shortage may extend to 50pc in Kharif season. Punjab will be the second sufferer of the water shortage because Balochistan and NWFP have been exempted from sharing shortage of water in every season.
