People flood Sunday Bazaars to buy atta at subsidised rates
By SALMAN ABDUHOO September 1, 2008 LAHORE - Flour crisis has deepened in the City due to shortage of the commodity, as the millers and the Punjab government failed to develop a consensus over the issue of flour price during a long series of meetings.
A Ramazan Bazaar survey conducted by The Nation revealed that ‘atta’ (flour) was the most precocious commodity as people were running after it, which was rarely available there.
People visited the Ramazan Bazaar in view of purchasing atta at the subsidised rate of Rs 300 per kg. A buyer while talking to The Nation said the holy month of Ramazan was around the corner and attracted by the special offer of Ramazan Bazaar he came here, however, he was disappointed to see the people already haggling with the vendors over the issue of atta price.
Another visitor stated that vendors were not implementing the prescribed rates of the government and not selling the flour on discount rate of Rs 300 rather selling it at Rs 370 per kg.
People were seen rushing to different stalls but a lot of them were seen buying flour in larger quantities to stock it for the whole of month.
