City to receive widespread heavy rain today
Source: OUR STAFF REPORTER August 3, 2008 The monsoon from Arabian Sea was already active causing torrential rain in Balochistan where three persons died due to rain related incident. The rain water also caused havoc in Sukker and break down of electricity for hours. The dry district of Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Shahdadkot and adjoining areas were also inundated in rain water.
Heavy rain also lashed Southern Punjab districts of Khanpur (115mm), Bahawalpur (83mm), Sahiwal (76mm), Rahim Yar Khan (71mm), DG Khan (40mm), Mianwali (36mm), Joharabad (35mm), Larkana (20mm), Bahawalnagar (12mm), Faisalabad (60mm) on Saturday.
Lahore received 1mm rain in the morning. As a result of rain, the temperature dropped considerably. The Westerly wave caused considerable rain in Northern Areas and Kashmir. This would be the third combined incursion of monsoon currents from Bay of Bengal and Arabian during the current monsoon season.
The first lashed heavily on July 14 and the second after a week. During the intervening period, weak monsoon currents from Arabian Sea hit parts of the country and Lahore causing considerable rain. The met office has predicted above average rain this season and it has already remained above average in the month of July. While the low-lying areas in urban and rural areas inundated with rain-water. There was no significant raise in the river gauge of water. All the rivers were flowing below normal condition. However, due to heavy rain in the upper catchments areas during the last 48 hours, River Ravi witnessed medium flood on Saturday. The river was flowing at head Balloki near Lahore at 42,000 cusecs.
