Jeweller's murder during robbery sparks violence

Violent agitation started when two robbers entered a jewellery shop situated at the Workshop stop at the Walton Road and shot dead the owner of the shop. The robbers escaped after looting handful jewellery from the shop. The victim was identified as Rana Ejaz, 40, resident of Workshop stop.

Soon after the incident family of the victim, his relatives and locals blocked the Walton Road for two hours, burnt tyres and shouted slogans against the lawlessness in the city.

A large number of police from around four police stations rushed to the spot to disperse the people but failed.

Worst traffic mess was witnessed on the road. The protestor damaged some vehicles when motorists tried to use the road during the protest.

The angry people carrying clubs and bricks in their hands threatened to give tough time to the police if it tried to disperse them forcibly.

They claimed that it was fourth robbery incident that had taken place on the Walton Road in the last 30 days.

After finding strong resistance, some senior police officers also reached the spot and launched reconciliation efforts with assurances to arrest the robbers as soon as possible.

The angry mob finally dispersed and traffic was restored. The police shifted the body for autopsy and registered a case against the assailants.

About the incident Factory Area police said two robbers held Ejaz and his maternal nephew Bilal at gunpoint and started looting ornaments.
