Soft security at Railway Station

By SALMAN ABDUHOO September 8, 2008

LAHORE - Though Pakistan Railways claims to have improved security at the country’s major railway stations in terms of installing walkthrough scanners as well as security cameras, yet it lacks vigilant and alert security staff needed at crowded premises, which are always vulnerable to terrorist attacks. As terrorist threats are mounting with every passing day in the country, the security situation at the Lahore Railway Station remains at the mercy of the unwatchful security guards or police officials.

The security personnel seem spending leisure time while performing their duty and lack of discipline is often seen.

In the past, terrorists had usually targeted public places to pressurise the government.

A visit to Lahore City railway station by the scribe reveals that Railway police guards do not bother to search the passengers manually or check their luggage with the help of metal detectors.

Security guards often sit beside the walkthrough scanners instead of standing watchful to closely monitor the commuters. They do not fully use their skills and training to thoroughly observe travellers.
