Soft security at Railway Station
By SALMAN ABDUHOO September 8, 2008 Similarly the bomb disposal squad and the police personnel who have been assigned the duty to check every single person and his/her luggage are seen busy in cutting jokes during duty timing without paying any heed to the passengers who cross into the platform area.
When matter was raised before these on-duty officials they protected themselves by saying how can they check thousands of people at the same time, adding that they are also human beings and how could they check each and every single person.
An officer present on the occasion explained that that they keep eye only on suspicious people. He further said that if a person was carrying something that could lead to an untoward incident, he could be recognised easily.
A commuter Irfan Shah who regularly travels through trains stated that this irresponsible approach of the railway police was in fact dangerous.
It is to be recalled that following terrorism at Samjhota Express in India in February 2007, in which more than 60 Pakistanis died, Pakistan Railways had decided to install walkthrough machines at almost all the major railways stations.
Public relations officer Ejaz Shah, when contacted in this regard, did not attend the phone call despite repeated calls.
