Essential sacrifices

By By Amal Shakeb October 8, 2008

Three years back the country shook with the largest earthquake in its history. The effects of that quake are still evident in the northern areas of the country. After that the country has been lucky enough not to be struck by any other such disaster. However, it has not been that lucky. Since then the country has been shook many times; not by natural, but many unnatural manmade disasters. By bomb blasts, which shake and kill.

We are as helpless in front of these manmade blasts as we were in front of the natural disaster. We couldn’t control it, nor could we stop any similar mishap from taking place in the future. At that time, the reaction of our political leaders was much similar to the reaction of any other bomb blast. However, unlike the bomb blasts, then the blame couldn’t be put on the tribal militants. The politicians couldn’t condemn this act, that would have classified them as blasphemers, but they offered their condolences for the victims. They visited the affected areas, provided aid and relief, and promised to rebuild the unfortunate land of Kashmir.
