CJ takes suo moto notice of bonded labour

LAHORE -Chief Justice Lahore High Court Justice Sayed Zahid Hussain (LHC), taking suo moto notice of tying a young man of Sheikhupura to 57 feet long chain by a landlord and forced him to work as bonded labourer in his fields, has summoned DPO Sheikhupura for November 13.

The CJ has also sought a report from DPO that what steps had been taken for the protection of victim’s family and the measure adopted to avert such incident in future. The CJ took suo moto after a news item with photograph appeared in section of print and electronic media depicting Shamsher working in the fields while his feet were tied with a long chain.

According to the news item, Irfan Awan had detained Shamsher for two months on a plea that his brother had not retuned the borrowed money. A police team raided the place and got him freed, while the landlord was arrested.
