Govt urged to repeal all biased laws against women
Source: OUR STAFF REPORTER October 11, 2008 They further demanded that the state and non-state actors and civil society must respect pluralism, promote a democratic culture and informed debate and dialogue in the country while ensuring women’s participation in political, social and economic processes.
The women welcomed the end of military rule and advent of democracy in Pakistan.
Certain resolutions were passed wherein they condemned rising intolerance, extremism and intolerance of which women in particular are becoming greater victims. Condemned women killing in the name of honour and enslavement of women when taken in the so-called protective custody of the sardars; burning of girls schools, video shops and parlours and the persistent campaign to shut the doors of education on girls in some areas of Pakistan.
In the end of the conference awards were given to the certain women and speaking on the occasion Asima Jahangir opposed the death sentence and said that it should be eliminated.
The conference recommended awards for Shery Rehman, Fahmida Mirza, Begum Naseem Wali Khan, Afzal Touseef, Justice Majida Rizvi, Mukhtaran Mai, Kanwal Naseem, Shaista Zaid, Naheed Khan, Babra Sharif, Zeba Ali and others.
