Flour shortage hampers sasti roti programme

By SALMAN ABDUHOO November 15, 2008

LAHORE - Restaurant owners and ‘naan bais’ all over the City, selling roti at cheaper rate are facing numerous difficulties in obtaining flour on subsidised rates, besides humiliation and embarrassment at the hands of flourmills staff, it was learnt during a survey conducted by The Nation.

During a visit to small restaurants and tandoors in various localities of the City, it was observed that their owners were selling only ‘naan’ and ‘khamiri roti’ for Rs 5 or 6 instead of ‘sada roti’.

“If they sell ‘sada roti’ at Rs 2 they will suffer loss and if they sell it for Rs 3 they will be raided by the City District Government officials and even might be charged with fine. They have chosen the best way to avoid these hiccups and stopped to sell ‘sada roti’ totally and are earning profit by selling only ‘naan’ and ‘khamiri roti’ for Rs 5 and in some cases at Rs 6.”
