JI bewildered over talk of 'safe exit' to Musharraf

Source: OUR STAFF REPORTER August 17, 2008

Acting JI Amir Syed Munawar Hassan stated here Saturday that under the garb of impeachment of General (r) Musharraf, it appeared that the PPP government was going to give him a safe passage to let him go scot-free for what brutality was shown under his directives to the innocent students of Jamia Hafsa. He said Musharraf was not only responsible for the killing of thousands of citizens but also accountable for handing over hundreds citizens to the US to earn dollars in addition to putting sovereignty and solidarity of the country at stake. Munawar said the deposition of judges and split in the judiciary in gross violation of the Constitution were unpardonable offences of Musharraf who, he added, during his stay in power, endeared interests of the US more than of Pakistan’s. He should not be given a chance to flee from the country without facing free trial under the law. Now, he said, the PPP wanted to let him wriggle out by resigning the office of President so that he could safely avoid impeachment and the following trial under high treason.  The JI leader blamed Musharraf for committing unaccountable crimes. Apparently, preparations were underway to impeach Musharraf after the provincial assemblies had carried resolutions against his stay in power but behind the curtain, the PPP was paving the way to let him go unharmed, he observed.
