Patients fear threat to life

By ASIF CHAUDHRY September 19, 2008

LAHORE - Non-availability of life saving drug ‘NeoMercazole’ has put the lives of hundreds of patients at risk. The said drug is not available in the market for the last two months while its alternative Carbizole is available only at some stores with its black-marketing at its pinnacle.

The medical experts say that the said drug is prescribed to stop over functioning of the thyroid glands, which could cause serious effects on the health of the patient. A considerable delay in using this medicine could also cause blockage of the heart veins, the experts warned.

The patients are in trouble when their consultants insist them to use NeoMercazole instead its alternate Carbizole. Principal Fatima Jinnah Medical College/Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and renowned surgeon Prof Dr Majeed Chaudhry said that NeoMercazole is a life saving drug. This medicine is advised to the patients suffering from thyroid glands for six to 12 weeks before surgery to avoid complications.
