LAHORE - The PPP Punjab parliamentary party meeting held at Governor’s House on Thursday unanimously nominated party’s co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari as candidate for the next President of Pakistan.
Punjab Governor Salman Taseer flanked by PPP’s Punjab Ministers Raja Riaz Ahmed, Tanvir Ashraf Kaira, Ashraf Sohna, Rana Tanvir-ul-Islam and Neelum Jabbar announced this in a briefing held after the meeting at Governor’s House. MPAs including Qasim Zia, Sajida Mir, Uzma Zahid Bokhari, Nazim Hussain Shah, Shuakat Mehmood Basra, Iftikhar Ali Babar Khitran, Pervaiz Rafique, Maj. (R) Abdur Rehman Rana, PPP Lahore President Aziz-ur-Rehman Chann, Sami Ullah Khan and a large number of other parliamentarians were also present.
“It is a historical day. PPP has come a long way to this moment to announce its candidate for the post of President of Pakistan. It is the right of the PPP since it is country’s largest political party having representation in all the four provinces and at federal level. Asif Ali Zardari will be a civilian president enjoying support of all the four provinces. The central executive committee will meet on Friday (today) and our demand for Zardari’s nomination would be made there,” Taseer said.
“The election of Zardari as President would be a great victory for Pakistan and the democracy as well,” he was of the view.
