By Ashraf Javed October 21, 2008

LAHORE - The new electricity bills being issued these days with inflated tariff of 50 per cent have shocked the consumers across the City, forcing them to come on roads to express their anger.

Sources revealed the PPP government implemented the new tariff rates quietly in September last. As such it was the first billing with 50 per cent increase, which is too big an increase to digest by the people. The new bills landed at the people’ houses like a bombshell this month, leaving no other option with the helpless consumers but to raise hue and cry and stage violent protest demonstrations against excessive billing.

The sources in the Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) blamed the government for increasing the electricity tariff, which as a result are multiplying miseries of the public already hit hard by inflation and record surge in the fuel and gas prices.
