CM calls for producing at least 5,000 PhDs a year
Source: OUR STAFF REPORTER August 24, 2008 LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister, Shahbaz Sharif has said that a special committee comprising educationists and Secretary Higher Education would be constituted for fixation of educational standard of students and for this purpose a regular Talent Endowment Scheme is being introduced.
He expressed these views while addressing prize distribution ceremony of position holders of BA and BSc examination at Punjab University New Campus on Saturday.
Members National and Provincial Assembly, teachers, students and their parents were also present on the occasion.
The chief minister said that without the promotion of education, Pakistan can neither be put on road to progress nor can compete with other developed nations. He said that government would utilize all out resources for the promotion of education in the province. He said that if position holders of BA and BSc examinations want to study at local level or abroad for getting PhD degree beside post graduation, Punjab government will bear all their educational expenditures.
He said that Punjab University is an old and great educational institution of the subcontinent but only 70 to 75 students get their degree in PhD annually while this number in neighbouring countries is nearly 60,000. He said even if it is compared with regard to population, this number should be 500 in Punjab.
