Published: March 25, 2009

LAHORE - A large number of doctors of the Mayo Hospital on Tuesday blocked the Mall Road for more than one hour in protest against the aggression of some policemen who allegedly thrashed an on-duty doctor of the hospital.
Dr Muhammad Asif Tanveer was present at the East Medical Ward of the hospital when two policemen namely Sakhi Sarwar and Hamid Razzaq accompanied by three unknown persons turned up and exchanged hot words with him. They dragged and brought him outside the department where they subjected him to severe torture. The hospital staff, visitors and patients also witnessed the whole incident.
The doctors left their duties soon after the incident, gathered in front of the office of the Medical Superintendent (MS) and demanded strict action against the attackers. The angry medics took out a rally under the banner of the Young Doctors Association and the Young Medicos King and reached the Mall Road to demonstrate against the manhandling of their colleague. They raised slogans against the aggression of the police officials. They blocked the road for over 60 minutes and later marched towards the Punjab Assembly Hall due to which the traffic remained suspended on the Mall Road as well as other adjoining roads.
A witness and protester, Dr Sohail Kazmi, said that the hospital employees and other doctors rushed to the spot and rescued Dr Asif from the brutal assailants. They later fled the scene leaving the doctor injured, Dr Kazmi added.
The angry doctors protested against the incident for more than one hour causing huge traffic mess on the Mall. Police and traffic wardens blocked all the small roads leading to the Mall for all kinds of traffic by setting up barriers causing serious troubles to the motorists and other people.
Muhammad Afzal, an official of the Gwalmandi Police Station, maintained that policemen were not involved in manhandling or beating the doctor. “We have received an application from Dr Asif wherein he has alleged that (an unknown man) Mian Amir Razzaq and his three accomplices have tortured him.” The policeman claimed that Dr Asif did not nominate any police official in his application, adding that FIR had been registered against the assailants with no arrest so far.
