Metro, factories contaminating underground water
By IQTIDAR GILANI August 29, 2008 LAHORE - Due to the lack of proper drainage system, the factories and a big cash and carry store at Multan Road, are dumping thousands of litre liquid waste daily into cesspit, contaminating the underground water, which is a great health hazard for the entire City.
There are over 150 factories and a big German cash and carry store Metro at Multan Road, which are disposing their wastewater into underground subsoil through cesspit designed for drainage purposes, but they carry the spectre of disturbing the aquifer. The Environmental Protection Agency and the city district government, however, knowing that this practice is going on unchecked, are acting as silent spectators for the reason being that some big guns are involved in this shady practice and so these agencies are helpless.
