Metro, factories contaminating underground water
By IQTIDAR GILANI August 29, 2008 During the last month, the CDG stopped drainage of about 45 factories that ultimately caused closure of these units. In the close vicinity of these factories is located Metro, a German cash carry store, which is the main polluter in the area. While action was taken against these factories, this cash and carry store at Thokar Niaz Baig was left untouched. All the CDG did was serving of a notice and then kept mum. Later, these factories managed to convince the concerned quarters and got their drainage system restored.
Metro alone is daily injecting 80,000 to 90,000 litres wastewater underground, with the EPA and CDG not bothering to stop or even ask the management to cease this deadly activity. The foreign store hosts a slaughterhouse and a giant chilling plant. The wastewater generated by washing of meat, vegetables and other such items, and toilet waste is disposed off through cesspits into aquifer. Besides this, semi liquid waste and rotten items are also disposed off in the same manner.
Sources in the EPA informed The Nation, that the agency succumbed to the pressure and decided to stay away from the big fish.
