Testing time ahead for Kurd
By SAJID ZIA October 29, 2008 LAHORE - Pro-movement lawyers’ Professional Group has made history by securing a landslide victory in Supreme Court Bar Election raising hopes of the community as well as the public siding with the cause of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s restoration to the office that the new body of the Bar would speed up efforts to reach the target.
The last 12 years history of the SCBA does not show any precedent that almost all candidates of the same panel got elected on the slogan of ‘independent judiciary’ in a situation when every hurdle was placed in their way under political consideration to end the struggle. Election observers find a high cost campaign by the anti-movement lawyers to seek victory of their candidate M Zafar who had support of Federal Law Minister Farooq H Naek, Attorney General of Pakistan Sardar Latif Khan, Vice Chairman Pakistan Bar Council Saidur Rahman and eight strong members of the PBC as well as federal law officers and even the Progressive Group of former Attorney General Malik Muhammad Qayyum. In the blame-game, the supporters of Ali Ahmad Kurd alleged that buying of voters and their enrolment as members of the Bar was carried out just to get their votes for Zafar. However, these charges could not be proved on material evidence.
