LAHORE Aisamul-Haq Qureshi on Sunday became the first Pakistani ever to be seeded at a grand slam tournament.
With his partner Rohan Bopanna, Aisam is the 16th seed at this years US Open in Flushing Meadows, New York.
Aisam and Bopanna were drawn against the All American pair of Brian Battistone and Ryler Deheart in the first round, and they proceeded to win with a score of 6-3, 7-6(7).
Both sides sailed through the first set of service games to make the score 2-2. Aisam and partner did face a test at 2-2. They won the first set 6-3.
The second set was a much livelier affair, with the Americans, already forced into a corner, deciding to fightback. This made the second set a mirror image of the first, in that now, it was the Americans dictating the pace. At 2-3, Aisam and Bopanna succumbed to their opponents aggression and lost their serve. The Americans held their own serve to lead 5-3.
This was a stern test for the Asians, who showed great resolve to break back Dehearts serve, and eventually restore parity at 5-5.
The set went into a tie break, where Aisam and Bopanna came out firing. They secured an early mini-break, and led all the way up to 6-4. Here again there was a slight hiccup for Aisam and Bopanna and the Americans stemmed the tide somewhat, and put a few points together to serve at 7-8 to stay in the match. Aisam and Bopanna were unwilling to stretch the match any longer, and pounced to win the tie break 9-7, and the match 6-3 7-6(7).
In the next round, they will play the winner of the match between American Pair of Sekou Bangoura & Nathan Pasha and German pair of Michael Kohlmann & Jarkko Nieminen.
