LAHORE - Dope-tainted Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif has failed to clear his 'B' sample test which too has returned positive for the banned steroid nandrolone.
But an interesting thing to note was that the quantity of nandrolone was 6.2 in the previous test but this is time it is 5.4. However, quantity of the substance may differ from both the results but it was clear that he has nandrolone in his body.
Asif was quoted by a news channel that he would challenge the case on grounds that the quantity of nandrolone in results was not consistent.
The 25-year-old fast bowler tested positive during the Indian Premier League competition held between April and June, and the Pakistan Cricket Board suspended him in July on the basis of his first sample.
Asif tested positive for nandrolone in 2006 along with fellow paceman Shoaib Akhtar. He was banned for one year and Akhtar for two, but the bans were overturned on appeal.
Asif, who faces a possible two-year ban, and his lawyer have questioned this discrepancy. "I can only confirm the B sample test has come positive but the results of both tests are different which is strange to us," a cricket website quoted Shahid Karim, Asif's lawyer.
Asif, who was in Geneva for the analysis along with his lawyer, indicated he might appeal against the result. "They took my urine samples at the same time in the IPL and the tests have shown up different results," he said. "That certainly makes my case stronger."
Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, had previously said that if Asif's B sample also tests positive, the matter will be taken up by the IPL's drugs tribunal, comprising Sunil Gavaskar, Dr Ravi Bapat (ex-vice chancellor of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences) and lawyer Shirish Gupte. The tribunal will take a decision in accordance with the ICC's anti-doping code, which the IPL had adopted.
Besides testing positive during the IPL, Asif is also embroiled in another mess, having been detained at Dubai airport in June for allegedly possessing drugs.
Asif was released by authorities after 19 days in detention, but an internal inquiry by the Pakistan board have reportedly found "pretty conclusive" evidence against the player, and have recommended a ban.
