Karachi Boats Club impresses in rowing contest

ISLAMABAD - Karachi Boats Club (KBC) produced impressive performance in the 28th National Rowing Championships 2008 by wining three gold medals on the opening day at Rawal Lake, Islamabad on Saturday.
In the absence of top national oarsmen from Pakistan Army and Pakistan Navy, KBC's players achieved remarkable results in the three competitions by finishing the line comfortable to get top positions. However, WAPDA and Police grabbed each one gold medal in the 2-day national rowing championship. Army soldiers and Navy sailors were asked to report back to their respective departments due to Pakistan India boarder tension.
As many as 10 affiliated units of Pakistan Rowing Federation (PRF) including Punjab, North West Frontier Province (NWFP), Islamabad Rowing Association (ISA), Karachi Boat Club (KBC), Pakistan WAPDA, Pakistan Police, Pakistan Income Tax (PIT), Rowing Coaches Association (RCA), Masters Rowing Association (MRA) and Rowing Umpires Association of Pakistan (RUAP) are competing for the national rowing title.
On Saturday, in the Singles Scull competition, KBC's Sadam Sheihk got the gold medal followed Imran Ali from Pakistan Police, who got silver while Kashif claimed bronze with third position. Anil Shahzad and Tariq Ikram got second gold medal for KBC in the Double Scull event in which Zohab Zia and Faisal Mehmood got silver for their team Pakistan WAPDA. Third position race will be held on Sunday (today) at the same venue.
KBC's women Mehak Tirani and Kiran Ikram also displayed excellent skill of game in the Women's Double Scull competition to clinch another gold for KBC followed by local girls Minelle Gaya and Mariyam Gabaja, who won silver medal in the women's race at Rawal Lake.
Policemen Atif Bajwa and Imran Ali got the gold medal in Light Weight Double Scull race while WAPDA team comprising Zohab Zia, Nawaz Khan, Haroon and Zaheer Ahmed won the gold medal in Coxless-Four evnet.
