PIA-pilots row yet to end

KARA CHI - The issue between Pakistan International Airline (PIA) and Pakistan Airline Pilot Association (PALPA) was partially resolved as PIA had issued the admin order. But the dispute again started as PALPA showed reservations on this order, according to officials of PALPA. We have the reservations that the PIA management wants the pilots to perform more than 2 sectors during night hours with single crew. This is something that is not acceptable to the pilots, as it has many security concerns, said Capt Suhail Baluch. Suhail also pointed out that during the negotiation with the PIA management it was agreed that 25 flights would be planned for a pilot in a month. But admin order revealed that 25 flights would be planned for a week which is very difficult if not impossible, added Suhail. Moreover, PALPA has demanded for the implementation of the admin order from 1st of May but PIA is going to implement agreement from 1st June which is clear violation of the agreement that reached in front of Ministry of Defense, said Suhail. We have no objections to perform duty of 12 hours, but our only demand is that PIA should consider the fact that if a flight is planned for night, it should not be more than 2 sectors, he added. We have not demanded for salary increment but only asked for benefits for the retired pilots. Now, as the management has shown stubbornness, we have also demanded for the benefits, he mentioned. It is worth mentioning that only 16 pc of the total income of PIA has been spent on its employees, while rest of the airlines spends 35 to 36 pc on their employees. He mentioned that during last 5 years, 10 to 15 pc pilots have been grounded because of their health. Meanwhile, the spokesperson from PIA said that the duty hours at night will start from 2200- 0600 hours and pilots would cover two sectors only during night. The implementation of the admin order is from 1st June because the plan for the month of May was already scheduled and no changes could be made in it. For the question about 25 flights in a week, he added that if it is in the agreement than it is right, they have to take 25 flights in a week. This is, however, to meet the required 70 hours flying period in 3 months, he added.
