NWFP govt presents Rs214 bn budget
The NWFP government on Wednesday presented over Rs214 billion tax-free budget in the provincial assembly for the year 2009-10 showing over Rs three and half billion deficit, report said. Senior Provincial Minister Rahimdad Khan presented Rs214.2 billion budget before the house with Rs3.6 billion deficit in revenue receipts and expenditures and a development program of Rs51.15 billion with main focus on poverty alleviation, promotion of health and education sectors. The senior minister holding the portfolio of Planning and Development presented the budget in place of Finance Minister Engr. Muhammad Humayun Khan who is currently under treatment at a hospital in Islamabad. Tight security arrangements had been made around the provincial assembly building for the budget session and all the roads leading towards assembly building were heavily manned by the law enforcers to keep a vigil on the activities of the suspects. The NWFP Government which received unprecedented influx of the internally displaced people that surged to around 3.9 million in the down districts in the wake of operation against militants in Malakand Division has proposed allocation of Rs2 billion for their rehabilitation in the budget 2009-10. Moreover, no new tax has been imposed by the government in the budget.
