Criminals roam free

With no let up in crime incidents all over Punjab, it is time to pull up those entrusted with the task of maintaining law and order. On Saturday, criminals went on the rampage, plundering the city at will and shooting down those who offered resistance. Responsibility for law and order squarely falls on the provincial government. The prevailing situation is a far cry from the kind of good governance, a constant refrain of the CM. The number of reforms introduced in the police department has not produced results, like elimination of thana culture. It accounts for the ever soaring graph of crime rate. What is clear is that nothing short of an overhaul would come handy.

Also as mentioned in a section of press, a large percentage of the police force has been reduced to performing guard duties escorting the VIPs or manning their miles-long routes. This is unjust given that already the force is operating with a skeleton staff thanks to lack of any regular or a merit oriented recruitment process. As of now a dire need for training and accountability is being felt. With check and balance, it is childish to expect the policemen, many of them are given to errant practices and taking heavy bribes.
