Pak-India talks resume

July 06, 2012

Foreign Secretary level talks between India and Pakistan have resumed in New Delhi. A step forward this time around was that among other issues, the core dispute of Kashmir was discussed, previously sidestepped. Against the backdrop of these talks, is the arrest of a Mumbai terror suspect, alleged by New Delhi as one of the main culprits who coordinated the attacks from Karachi. Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram backed this allegation with going as far as to talk of state actors’ involvement from Pakistan and complained that their demands of action have been met with prevarication. He stated that the dossier was not given to the Indian Secretary to hand it over to his counterpart but he had been briefed and was free to discuss it. The ghost of the Mumbai attacks that is still alive and kicking should not be allowed to determine the outlook for ties.

These talks will yield no miracle since India seems as intent as ever to sticking to its intransigent stand. This will keep the two countries from coming closer and resolving their issues peacefully. The much sought after peace dividend that can usher in an era of prosperity can be achieved if the outstanding disputes, including Kashmir, are resolved peacefully, rather than staying embroiled in arguments endlessly.
