Daring terror act

The six terrorists, riding motorcycles, attacked a house in the thickly populated locality Ichhra of Lahore where prison staff from KPK and police had been lodged and killed 10 of them early Thursday morning and made good their escape. They struck Punjab second time in less than a week. Earlier, a group, clad in police uniform, had raided an army camp on the bank of River Chenab near Gujrat and killed seven, without leaving any clue behind. This is an alarming scenario because it indicates that the security arrangements in the province are not strict enough to handle a situation of this nature. Questions have been raised why the KPK prison staff, which were in Lahore on training, had been lodged at such a vulnerable location without providing due security. According to some media reports, the police arrived at the scene an hour and a half later. The KPK Inspector General of Prisons complains that for 11 hours the police failed to arrange postmortem of the victims.

A debate has been raging for long that we lack a proper sense of security needed to handle unforeseen incidents; yet, the federal and provincial governments have failed to remedy the situation. It is noteworthy that the PTT, which has claimed responsibility, had threatened to carry out such dastardly operations. The authorities must rise to the occasion and take necessary precautionary steps to protect citizenry.
