Hindus’ migration

In an interview with this paper, Minister for Minorities in Sindh Dr Mohan Lal has dilated on the allegation of Hindus fleeing away to India. From his comments, it appears the issue is fictitious, largely based on rumour mongering that according to him constitutes a smear campaign against the PPP setup. Hindus visit certain religious sites in India on a yearly basis while others go there to meet relatives, he said. At the same time he admitted that there were a few but isolated incidents of victimisation of the Hindu community though they should not be generalised. He pointed to thousands of what he called patriotic Hindu families residing in Sindh safely that had never thought about moving away to India. But even if these happen to be a few or isolated for that matter, the charge of forced conversions leading to migrations of some families needs to be thoroughly investigated. The committee formed at the behest of President Zardari has found that some of the Hindu families face harassment at the hands of certain groups. As the country’s security situation has greatly deteriorated, there is need for all the more emphasises on making it a safe place for minorities like the rest of Pakistanis. Such incidents must be taken notice of but blowing them up to the point where they could cause schisms in society is not justified.
