A friend indeed

China’s offer of financial assistance of up to $500 million to Pakistan to help it cope with its balance of payments problems at a low interest rate is highly appreciated. The offer was made during President Zardari’s first official trip to the country. This is apart from the offer of yuan 70 million that the all-weather friend has made to help us pay the circular debt, one of the main causes of electricity shortfall. The financial assistance will come handy since it comes at a time when the economy is in a shambles and the people are going through a rough patch pinched by loadshedding and closure of industry. Under the circumstances, Islamabad must not hesitate to accept it. This money will also hopefully go into easing the financial crunch faced by the government especially when it now has to start returning the loans taken from international financial agencies.

China understands that as a partner in the international fight to eliminate militancy, Pakistan has sacrificed more than any other country while the international community has been found wanting in its obligation of standing by it in its hour of trial. Pak-China relations are a different story. China has invariably stood by us and not abandoned us in difficult times, which points to the reality of an exemplary friendship.
