The accused was appointed as the PCRWR chairman in the former president Pervez Musharraf-led government. The United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (Unicef) and the Environment Ministry funded the council to conduct research study on water resources, including clean drinking water and irrigation system.
The FIA launched an inquiry on the complaint former federal minister Azam Khan Sawati. The inquiry revealed that the accused established bogus firms in the name of his favorites and huge funds were issued in their names.
The investigator said three firms namely Ultimate Solutions, Indus Engineering and Water Engineering Technology (WET) were established.
He said a firm was got registered in the name of a retired tube well operator Mumtaz Ahmad Bhatti and Rs15 million was issued in his name, though Bhatti was an illiterate person and it was mentioned in his contract that he would offer services as water consultant.
Moreover, Dr Akram’s address was mentioned in the column of residential address in the contract, he said, adding that another firm was got registered in the name of Raja Sultan, an aide of Dr Akram.
He said that on complaint, inquiry was started and after allegations were proved, an FIR was registered against him.
FIA Director Waqar Haider constituted a team, comprising Inspector Anwar Khan and Sub Inspector Ghulam Murtaza under ACC Assistant Director Jameel Ahamd Khan, to arrest the accused, which arrested him from his residence at Mughalpura.
