RAWALPINDI - A trial court started retrial of PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto (BB) murder case on Tuesday recording the statement of one of the four prosecution witnesses here.
Rao Abdur Rahim, the counsel of an accused arrested in connection with the BB assassination case, also cross-examined the witness. The court adjourned the hearing till October 29 with orders that the remaining three witnesses would appear on the next date for recording of their statement.
Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) Special Judge Chaudhry Habib-ur-Rehman took up the case while four prosecution witnesses Dr Hina Bukhari and Dr Rida Khan of Holy Family Hospital (HFH) and Dr Qasim and Dr Muhammad Ashraf of District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) also appeared before the court.
Of four prosecution witnesses, the court recorded the statement of Dr Hina Bukhari. In her statement, she told the court that the police and rescuers shifted injured persons in HFH whom she cured. She added in her statement that all the persons were injured in the bomb blast took place at Liaquat Bagh on December 27, 2007.
A defense lawyer Rao Abdur Rahim, representing an accused Abdul Rashid, cross-examined Dr Hina, which lasted for three hours. However, the court could not record the statements of remaining three prosecution witnesses.
In the courtroom, former City Police Officer (CPO) Syed Saud Aziz, and former SP Rawal Division Khurram Shehzad, who obtained bails in the case, along with FIA Special Public Prosecutor Chaudhry Muhammad Azhar, defense lawyers Muhammad Ilyas Siddiqui, Malik Muhammad Raffique and Naseer Tanvali were also present. However, former Governor Punjab and PPP Secretary General Sardar Latif Ahmed Khan Khosa, who was contesting the case on behalf of Tauqir Kaira, a victim of December 27 gun-and-bomb attack, did not appear before the court.

In his message issued here by the PPP media centre on the second death anniversary of Nusrat Bhutto on Wednesday, the former President said that she was a national asset who personally led from the front a heroic struggle for the restoration of democracy in the country. Seldom before a woman was so victimized and brutalized in the course of democratic struggle as was the Maadr i Jamhooriat, he said adding that the scars of brutalization that she wore on her mind and body will continue to shine as glittering medallions in spiting generations to come to struggle for lofty democratic ideals.
He said that Nusrat Bhutto stands tall in contemporary history as an exceptionally brave and strong woman who endured so much in a life long struggle for democracy and rights of the people, he said. For her elegance, grace and courage she will be long remembered as she continues to inspire generations of Party workers and democrats and lift them to higher goals in life.
"On the occasion of her second death anniversary while we pay her homage, let us also rededicate ourselves to the principles for which she struggled all her life and suffered so much. May her soul rest in eternal peace," said Zardari.
