OZ the Great and Powerful has knocked Jack the Giant Slayer from the top of the US box office.The 3D prequel to The Wizard of Oz has proved a hit with cinema-goers even though it received mixed reviews, earning $80.2m in its opening weekend. Last week’s number one, Jack the Giant Slayer, drops to second place with takings of $10m.Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy’s new comedy Identity Thief slipped to number three with $6.3m while Colin Farrell’s new action film Dead Man Down debuted at four with $5.3m. Dwayne Johnson and Susan Sarandon’s Snith rounds out the top five with $5.1. College comedy 21 and Over, Safe Haven, Silver Linings Playbook, Escape From Planet Earth and The Last Exorcism Part II complete the rest of the top ten. –MT
