Closer France raided over Kate pictures

POLICE on Wednesday raided the headquarters of French magazine Closer in a reported attempt to find out the identity of the photographer who took pictures of a topless Kate Middleton.According to reports, officers arrived at the Closer offices in Paris at 10am (local time) as part of their investigation into the images. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge yesterday secured an injunction preventing any further distribution of the photographs, after they had been printed in Closer, Italian magazine Chi and the Irish Daily Star, as well as online.Detectives are said to have entered Closer’s HQ looking for information “which might lead to the identity” of the paparazzo responsible for the images. On Tuesday, judges ordered Closer to hand over all files containing the images to the royal couple’s representatives within 24 hours. It is understood that the photos were taken on September 5 from a public road around a mile from Chateau d’Autet, where William and Kate were staying. Speaking to the Daily Mail about the raid, a police source said: “The aim is to seize any information which might lead to the identity of the photographer.”Judges this week described Closer’s use of the photos as a “brutal exhibition” of the couple’s intimacy. The court also dismissed the magazine’s argument that the royal couple were “visible from the street” when the images were taken. The court has imposed a daily fine of £8,060 if the images are republished or distributed by French Closer. The magazine also cannot sell them to any other magazines or publications around the world. However, the royal couple’s lawyers did not ask for existing copies of the edition of Closer to be removed from shelves as “the damage has already been done”.                                  –DS
