Student reveals phobia of buttons

A WOMAN has spoken out about her fear of buttons. Student Hannah Matthews, 21, has a rare condition known as koumpounophobia. Her first experience of terror came when she was 5 years old as she refused to wear her school blouse, The Mirror reports. Matthews, who panics at the sight of a fastener, said: “I know it’s irrational, and I obviously know a button can’t hurt me, but there’s just something about the shape and the texture that freaks me out. “It used to affect my chances in job interviews but now, if someone is wearing buttons, I try to control my reaction.” She is currently receiving counselling for the problem, which has restricted her into wearing clothes with zips.        –GN
