ISLAMABAD - The government has spent huge amount of over Rs 134 billion on law and order situation of the country during the nine months (July-March) of the last financial year 2011-12, as domestic security situation of the country has deteriorated manifolds after the war on terror.
According to the Finance Ministry’s figures, the government’s spending on law and order situation has increased by over 15 per cent in one year period, as it spent Rs 134.152 billion on internal security situation in July 2011-March 2012 period as compared to the Rs 116.355 billion of July 2010-March 2011. The federal government has spent Rs 43.801 billion, Punjab Rs 42 billion, Sindh Rs 25.47 billion, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Rs 14.7 billion and Balochistan spent Rs 8.182 billion on law and order situation in the period under review.
It might be mentioned here that government’s spending has increased on improving the domestic law and order situation after the start of war on terror, as the country’s internal security situation has worsened since then. The Finance Ministry on Tuesday released the figures of PRSP budgetary expenditures up to the 3rd quarter (July 2011-March 2012) period, which indicate spending on different sectors including law and order situation. The government has spent Rs 1,295 billion on PRSP in July 2011-March 2012 period as compared to the Rs 769.283 billion of July 2010-March 2011.
The break-up of spending on PRSP revealed that the government has spent Rs 270 billion on education sector of the country in the period under review as against Rs 220 billion of the same period last year. Similarly, the government has spent Rs 80 billion on health sector in July 2011-March 2012 period as compared to the Rs 64 billion of July 2010-March 2011.
The official figures further revealed that government has spent Rs 60 billion on the construction of roads, highways and bridges in the period under review against Rs 47 billion of the corresponding period previous year. The government has spent Rs 20 billion on environment/water and sanitation in July 2011-March 2012 period as compared to the Rs 13 billion of July 2010-March 2011.
Meanwhile, the government spending on population planning has increased to Rs 3.433 billion in the period under review from Rs 3.317 billion of the same period last year. However, spending on social security and welfare has decreased to Rs 6.66 billion in July2011-March 2012 period from Rs 7.43 billion of July 2010-March 2011. Similarly, according to the figures, the government has spent Rs 47.41 billion on natural calamities and other disasters, Rs 78.82 billion on agricultural sector, Rs 2. 93 billion on land reclamation, Rs 18.053 billion on rural development, Rs 174 million on low cost housing and Rs 975 million on justice administration during the period under review.
Meanwhile, the government has given subsidies worth of Rs 495 billion in July2011-March 2012 period as compared to the Rs 119 billion of July2010-March2011. The government has provided Rs 3.64 billion for People’s Works Programme-I in the period under review against Rs 2.030 billion of last year. However, spending on People’s Works Programme-II has doubled to Rs 34.732 billion in July2011-March 2012 period from Rs 17.51 billion of July2010-March2011.
According to the figures, the government has provided Rs 26 billion for Benazir income Support Programme and Rs 1.613 billion for Pakistan Bait-ul-Maal in the period under review.
