MABAD - The large number of diversions and road barriers set up at every nook and corner of the twin cities have mounted the public plight besides wasting their precious time amid prolonged traffic jams under scorching heat.
TheNation has observed that people due to traffic jams in the morning cannot reach their workplaces and desired destinations in time.
Worst situation of traffic jam was seen on Tuesday when Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani visited the Head Office of Pakistan Postal at Service Road near TNT Colony G-8. Thousands of vehicles remained stuck in traffic jams caused by the road blockades that were installed by the traffic police officials, during the PMs visit. Majority of the people stuck in the traffic jams at Zero Point, Service Road and Complex Road, included working class travelling between the twin cities.
The vehicles were seen crawling at snails pace, while the traffic officials of our 'Model Police were totally indifferent to public plight. The masses who shared their views with TheNation, said that it was not the first time when people had to suffer at the cost of a VVIP movement. Every now and then, the practice of halting the vehicles due to unrestricted movements of VIPs in public places was repeated with a nagging consistency.
On the other hand, other than those VIP 'routes, masses have to go through long diversions and road blockades even in the normal circumstances. What security purpose doe these diversions serve? At almost every road of the Capital, diversions are set up and we are asked to move from alternative routes, I wonder if that makes any sense with regard to curtailing security threat, Muhammad Ajmal at Zero Point stated.
The traffic police officials talk so high in the media about their progress and performance but practically they have done nothing to facilitate the public, he lamented.
Tanvir Akbar, a motorist said that those at the helm of affairs could not understand the masses agony unless they are made to travel like common public in the public transport. You cant imagine how it feels when traffic officials make us wait for hours under the burning sun. The situation gets even tougher for small kids and women, who travel by public transport, he said while demanding of the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Chaudhary to take suo motu action regarding the removal of these diversions that create traffic halts.
The CJ has taken suo motu actions to facilitate the people regarding electricity and fuel prices, its time he must take the city bosses to task for causing agony to commoner, demanded Tanvir.
