Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with UK: President

British Member of Parliament, former UK Foreign Secretary Mr. David Wright Miliband called on President Asif Ali Zardari  at Aiwan-e-Sadr here on Wednesday.

UK High Commissioner Mr. Adam Thomson and Secretary General to the President Mr. M. Salman Faruqui were also present during the meeting.
Pak-UK bilateral relations, regional situation and matters of mutual interest were discussed during the meeting.
The President during meeting said that Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with the UK as a friend and a genuine development partner.  He appreciated valuable contributions of Mr. David Miliband, during his tenure as Foreign Secretary, towards further strengthening the Pak-UK bilateral relations and in forging a robust partnership in all spheres of common interest.
The President said that “with our friendly relations based on mutual respect, trust and cooperation, there was a need to undertake concerted efforts for translating the strength of our equation into economic terms and to achieve the mutual trade targets set under Pakistan-UK Trade and Investment Roadmap.”
The President said that Pakistan looks forward to continued UK support for the country in the EU for trade concessions and for inclusion in GSP Plus.
Discussing regional situation, the President said that Pakistan has abiding interest in peace and stability of neighboring Afghanistan and would continue to support Afghan-owned and Afghan led reconciliation process in Afghanistan.
The President expressed Government’s resolve to continue its fight against the militants till its logical conclusion and said that the militants through their dastardly acts were showing their true face to the entire world.
The President during meeting also referred to the menace of illicit drugs and narco-trade which was serving as financial backbone for the militants. The President said that Pakistan would be hosting a regional conference in November this year on counter narcotics to promote a real-time substantive regional cooperation for effectively addressing the issue of drug production and trafficking.
Mr. David Miliband thanked the President for meeting and appreciated the sacrifices of the people of Pakistan in the war against militants.
