ISLAMABAD - An attempt by Naveed Qamar Minister for Water and Power to gain political mileage by announcing end of loadshedding might fail right after February as with the first sharp sunshine visible, power shortfall would increase, a top official of WAPDA told The Nation. The official said that the only reason is and would be the non-availability of fuel, otherwise, capacity is not that much bigger issue in the country. The most severe problem related to power sector is line losses those create shortage of funds and increase circular debt resultantly. The sources said that claim of Minister would be exposed and real situation will be in front of masses. The problem is not that Pakistan is energy thirsty but it needs cheaper energy that can solve the problems. If we closely see into the installed capacity data, it reflects that Pakistan has more than 22,000 installed capacity at the moment and in peak times of summer the demand goes to 18,000 megawatt or little higher so there is no reason that the masses should suffer from loadshedding. The sufferings are increasing every year because the government has done nothing in terms of starting cheaper energy projects like run of the river dams and small hydel projects on the canals those could help in resolving the problem. So here comes the real problem that is the energy mix. The sources said that the energy mix in the country should be 70 per cent hydel and 30 per cent other resources but the situation is total opposite. Now its very hard to decide that how much burden is to be transferred to the masses though the government is transferring it but still if the cost is concerned, the rates can be increased to 50 per cent to meet the generation cost. But again it would not be a wise decision as the question arises that why should the masses pay for line losses of more than 22 per cent those can be considered highest in the world. It is also worth mentioning here that The Nation has already reported as well that Rs 160-170 billion are being paid against only line losses those if could be decreased the miseries of masses can also be decreased.
