PM appreciates Demark’s support for Pakistan in EU

Mr. Villy Sovndal, Foreign Minister of Denmark, called on Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani at Prime Minister’s House Wednesday and discussed with him the prospects of further enhancing bilateral cooperation between the two countries in various sectors such as trade, energy, communication, education and high level exchanges. Danish Foreign Minister Villy Sovndal congratulated Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani for the continuity of democratic process in Pakistan, adding that the smooth transition of power would take place which would be extremely important for Pakistan and the world. The Prime Minister thanked the Danish Prime Minister and her government for supporting Pakistan in the European Union for including Pakistan in the GSP+ scheme. Mr. Villy Sovndal said that he was looking forward to a positive outcome tomorrow in the European Council regarding Autonomous Trade Package which would entitle Pakistan to have greater access to European Union. He appreciated Pakistan’s role as a front line state in the fight against extremism and terrorism. On the question of Afghanistan, the Prime Minister said that Pakistan fully supported the Afghan-led and Afghan owned political reconciliation because such a political settlement there offered the best and only durable solution as military solution was always short-lived. Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said that Pakistan Foreign Minister would be visiting Kabul tomorrow for discussions with the Afghan leadership. The Prime Minister said that he would also visit Kabul in the near future. He assured that his country would continue to extend support to Pakistan in the fields of education, human rights and women empowerment. The Prime Minister further said that on the request of President Karzai he made an appeal to Taliban to join the peace process within the ambit of Afghan constitution. The Prime Minister recalled his meetings with the Danish Prime Minister in Davos and also on the sidelines of Nuclear Safety Summit in Seoul. He felicitated Denmark on assuming the rotating Presidency of European Council for the seventh time.  The Prime Minster asked the Danish Foreign Minister to convey his best wishes to his Danish Counterpart Ms.  Helle Thorning-Schmidt and also extended her an invitation to visit Pakistan.
