Aggrieved father urges CJ to take suo moto notice

RAWALPINDI - The funeral prayer of the two brothers, killed during a “police encounter” at Deputy Ferooz Lane behind Holy Family Hospital (HFH), was held here at New Katarian Graveyard on Saturday. However, the deceased were laid to rest in their ancestral graveyard in I-10/3 amid sobs and tears by the heirs and tens of hundreds of area residents. Politicians, traders, students, area residents and other notables attended the funeral prayer.Meanwhile, scores of people kept visiting the residence of the two deceased brothers, Malik Jamshed and Malik Sajjad, condoling their death with their father Malik Rehmat Khan and elder brother Shamsheer Khan, former nazim. On the other hand, a first information report (FIR) was lodged with Police Station New Town against many including Malik Rehmat Khan, the father, Shamsheer Khan and Majid Khan, the brothers of the deceased and Shamail Khan, the cousin. However, no arrest was made by police so far.Talking to TheNation, Malik Rehmat and Shamsheer Khan termed the police encounter as extrajudicial killing and demanded of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to take suo moto notice of the brutal incident. They said that that their beloved ones were murdered by police without any reason or having single substantial evidence against them showing their involvement in anti-state activities.“If police have any clue against my sons proving their involvement in anti-state activities or their link with any banned outfit, then they should have been arrested and tried in any court of law,” said Malik Rehmat in chocked voice. He rejected the proposed judicial inquiry from District and Session Judge by police into the double murder and demanded formation of a judicial commission headed by judge of High Court. Background interviews and talks, held by this scribe with area residents and some local political leaders, revealed that Malik family has been residing in the area for the last 50 years. The family is very noble and enjoying good relations with neighbors and other people. They said that they never received even a single complaint against Sajjad and Jamshed or their other family members which made their characters murky or dubious.Ziaullah Chohan, President Shabab-e-Milli Pakistan District Rawalpindi, who is also close friend of Sajjad, said that the deceased was a very pious man and never harmed anybody. He said that police killed the two brothers without having evidences against them. He said that CJP Iftikhar Chaudhry should also look into the matter as if the people’s lives were not safe in the capital or its suburbs then the situation of Balochistan and FATA was more drastic. He also demanded a suo moto notice in the extra judicial killings.Raza Ahmed Shah, Jammat-e-Islami (JI) leader, also put his weight behind the victim family saying, “Members of Malik family are not involved in anti-state activities rather loyal citizens”. He was of view that police conducted this operation on the base of wrong intelligence reports. He said that Station House Officer (SHO) Jahangir Bhatti was not aware of what was going on in his area. He said that SHO disconnected his cell phone saying, “I don’t know why commandos launched this operation in my area” when he (Raza) phoned SHO asking the motives behind late night assault. He said that SHO’s unawareness raised many serious questions which have to be answered by Punjab government. Many other area residents condemned the police operation and demanded judicial inquiry from the judge of high court.
