ISLAMABAD - Owing to sheer negligence of the health managers, the poor conditions of basic health unit (BHU) in the rural areas of the federal capital have deprived residents of healthcare facilities in their localities. According to details, 14 BHUs are operational in 12 union councils of rural areas of the federal capital but they are reported to be without necessary facilities and have lost their usefulness in dispensing health facilities. Moreover, upgardation of BHUs in three union councils could not be started so far.As a result patients prefer to visit PIMS and Poly clinic where they get reasonable treatment despite heavy rush at the two government hospitals.  Locals said that essential facilities, equipment and services like washrooms, clean drinking water, oxygen, sterilizers, stretchers and wheelchairs etc were not available at many BHUs. District Health Department official on the condition of anonymity said that BHUs lack medicines, as only Rs 4 million were allocated for medicines during the year.

During a visit to Phulgran BHU, it was found in dilapidated condition, lack of medicines and boundary wall and even necessary staff. The residents said that people are reluctant to visit BHU due to lack of doctors, medicines and other facilities, adding that a large number of private clinics have sprung up in the area who were fleecing patient by charging exorbitant fee. They demanded the authorities to upgrade Phulgran BHU in order to ensured health care facilities in their locality.
